Drake throws shots at Joe Budden in a new song “Diplomatic Immunity”

Couple of days ago, Drake released two-tracked EP, Scary Hours. The EP includes a song “Diplomatic Immunity,” where Drake raps:

“Shit is Complex like short niggas ’round tall ladies
I gotta watch who I’m talkin’ to like it’s all agents
I’ve seen Buddin’ careers turn to sit around and talk about other careers, judgin’ their peers
Knowledge from niggas who did not contribute to none of this here.”

Drake is likely referring to the show Everyday Struggle on Complex. The show revolves around DJ Akademiks, and Joe Budden discussing other rappers’ careers.

These lines are a creative way of describing his complex situation. A “Napoleon complex” is a theorized condition seen in people of short stature. It is characterized by overly-aggressive or domineering social behavior. In other word’s Drake’s situation is complex like short men around tall women.

Based off the history between Drake and Budden, these lines most directly relate to Budden. Joe himself admitted a few times on Twitter that he’s aggressive. However, Drake flips it around by saying that Joe is aggressive because he has a complex.

A “budding career” is a career that has just begun. Joe started off his career with his hit “Pump It Up”; however, after the buzz of that song died down, Budden struggled to make it to the charts, and his career quickly deteriorated. “Budding career” is a play on “Budden’s career.”

When Drake came through on “4PM in Calabasas”, Budden gave him props for sounding “inspired”—as he was not impressed with Drake’s latest album at the time: Views.

Drake doesn’t believe that people like Budden and Akademiks should be able to critique others, as he believes that they are naive and have not done enough for the current state of hip-hop.
