HBO Reveals 5 Things to Know About Dr. Dre’s New Documentary “The Defiant Ones”

1. Iovine and Dre are a professional match made in hip-hop heaven.

Legendary record producer Jimmy Iovine first fell for Dr. Dre’s beats (pun very much intended), upon hearing The Chronic, the hip-hop doctor’s definitive album, which just celebrated its 25th anniversary.

2. Their musical influence catalyzed a multi-billion dollar empire.

Flash forward 20 years and, in addition to birthing labels Death Row Records and Aftermath Entertainment, Iovine — now head of Apple Music — partnered with his frequent collaborator to bring Beats Electronics to the next level. Dr. Dre’s industry standard headphones and sound systems were acquired by Apple in 2014 for a cool $3 billion.

3. Director Allen Hughes filmed the duo over three years.

While the doc originally set out to capture Iovine’s enigmatic four-decade career, the subject encouraged Hughes to focus on his relationship with Dre. Hughes took three years to capture their story, reports Rolling Stone.

4. Iovine knew Dr. Dre’s sound was engineered to change the future.

As reported by Variety, Iovine explained to the TCA press crowd, “The Chronic sounded like Pink Floyd’s The Wall or [The Beatles’] Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.” The revolution was undeniable.

5. Bono, Eminem, Gwen Stefani, Snoop Dogg and more appear in the film as well.

While they’ve been collaborating since the early 1990s, Dr. Dre wasn’t Iovine’s only client. Iovine is perhaps best known for his work at Interscope Records, which he helped found. His keen ear helped propel albums by industry icons like Patti Smith and U2 to Eminem, Gwen Stefani (and dozens of others), who appear in The Defiant Ones.
