Traditionally, the Academy Awards don’t bestow Oscars on rappers, no matter what their contribution to the film industry. That changed first in 2003, when Eminem became the first-ever MC to take home the award for Best Original Song at the Academy’s annual showcase. Three years later, Three-6 Mafia again set a new mark, becoming the first hip-hop group to take home the same honor. Two years ago, Common and John Legend took home the award for their song “Glory,” from the motion picture Selma. Eminem remains the only solo hip-hop act who ever won the academy award.
