“100” is 9th song on Big Sean’s 2012 “Detroit” mixtape. The song features Detroit legend Royce Da 5’9″, James Fauntleroy, and Kendrick Lamar. As stated in the chorus, this song is about all the goals and accomplishments that he has yet to accomplish before death.
In the song Royce raps:
“My nigga listen, I’m over the fame
You number 1, I’m number 23, my mission is take over the game
You rollin’ with lames, we ain’t rolling the same…”
Royce is saying taht you being in the #1 spot will only make him work harder. He’s also saying he’s #23 cause he’s the Michael Jordan of the game and therefore essentially the best. (Michael Jordan’s jersey number was 23.)
In the song Kendrick raps:
“I gotta climb these fucking charts
I gotta do something that’s innovative
Creative just to create a legacy before death do us part..”
Like most rappers and most people in general, Kendrick wants to leave a lasting legacy, wanting to be remembered. This is no easy task as there are more than 7 billion human beings in the world. Kendrick however, appears unfazed by this, instead using it as motivation to do all he can with his limited time on Earth. Kendrick continues his Hip-Hop wife metaphor stating he wants to leave a legacy before he dies and death parts him and Hip-Hop.
