On This Day, 5 Years Ago, Eminem & Royce 5’9″ Released “Lighters”


“Lighters,” featuring Bruno Mars, is the second single off Hell: The Sequel by Eminem and Royce 5’9″ aka Bad Meets Evil. Shady Records serviced the song for mainstream radio airplay in the United States on July 5, 2011. It was written and produced by Eminem, Battle Roy and The Smeezingtons.

Critics were divided in their reactions to “Lighters”. Most critics commented on the difference of style the song has compared to other songs on Hell: The Sequel. This was met with both positive and negative reception.

“Lighters” debuted on the US Billboard Digital Songs chart at #8, before the single’s release, on the issue dated July 2, 2011. On the Pop Songs chart, the song peaked at #2, and has been on the chart for 15 weeks. It also peaked at #1 on US Billboard Rhythmical Songs chart. The song has sold more than 2,500,000 copies in the US as of 2016.

“Lighters” also entered into the top charts in 18 different countries, including: Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, France, Germany and New Zealand.

The song went Platinum in Australia and Sweden, Gold in Australia, Silver in the United Kingdom and double platinum in the United States.
