On this day, exactly 16 years ago (May 23, 2000), Eminem released one of the greatest albums in the history of rap: The Marshall Mathers LP under Aftermath Records, Interscope Records, and Eminem’s newly founded label, Shady Records.
The album sold more than 1.76 million copies in the US in the first week alone, becoming the fastest-selling studio album by any solo artist in American music history. This record was later broken after 15 years following the release of the album 25 by Adele. But MMLP still remains the fastest-selling rap album of all time. By the end of 2000, The Marshall Mathers LP had become the second highest-selling album of the year with over 7.9 million sold
MMLP was certified diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America in March 2011 for shipping 10 million copies in the United States. By May 2015, the album had sold over 11 million copies in the United States and more than 32 million copies worldwide.
The album debuted at #1 in more than 30 countries, including: United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Ireland and South Africa.
The Marshall Mathers LP received generally positive reviews from critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream publications, the album received an average score of 78, based on 21 reviews. Allmusic and Rolling Stone gave 5 stars out of 5.
In 2003, The Marshall Mathers LP was ranked number 302 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time; it was moved up to number 244 in the magazine’s revised 2012 edition of the list. IGN named it the twenty-fourth greatest rap album of all time in a 2004 list.
In 2006, The Marshall Mathers LP was chosen by Time as one of the 100 greatest albums of all time. That same year, Q ranked it number 85 on a list of the greatest albums of all time, the highest position held by any rap album on the list. The Marshall Mathers LP was also the highest ranked rap album on the National Association of Recording Merchandisers & the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s list of the 200 greatest albums of all time, where it was placed at number 28.
In 2001, the album won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album and was nominated for Album of the Year. The Marshall Mathers LP has been ranked as one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time by Rolling Stone, Time, Complex and XXL.
