William “Bill” Maher, Jr. is an American comedian, writer, producer, political commentator, actor, media critic, and television host. As a television host, he is well known for the HBO political talk show Real Time with Bill Maher.
The Lansing State Journal caught up with Maher to get an idea what his fans in Michigan can expect from his shows, what he thinks about the state’s entertainment value, how news-based humor has evolved over time, what drives him to keep performing and finally talked about Eminem:
Interviewer: You told me you want rapper Eminem on your show. If you could get him on, what kinds of topics would you want to talk about?
Maher: “Well, I’m a huge fan. I would spend a little bit of time just gushing about how much he has entertained me. I’d not only bring that up but also how much he’s always made rap songs musical. He and Dr. Dre together are just phenomenal. He’s just so funny. I don’t know if there’s any other person in the history of music — at least in my history of music — who has made me laugh out loud as many times as he has while I’m listening to his records. He’s a phenomenal talent. I don’t know if he’s suited to being on a talk show. I’ve been told “Not so much,” and you almost never see him do that. But he’s a real artist and he speaks through his art, and that’s enough for me.”
Interviewer: Well, did you know Eminem’s daughter is a MSU student? Maybe she’ll be at the show. Madonna’s daughter, Lourdes, is a University of Michigan student. Good to know since you’ll also be in Ann Arbor.
Maher: “Eminem’s daughter, Hailie? No way. Wow! She’s all grown up. That makes me feel so old!”
