Nielsen compiled data for its 2014 U.S. music year-end report showing numbers from December 30, 2013 through December 28, 2014. Those numbers include album sales, song downloads and social media views.
Streaming continued to show significant growth in 2014. There were more than 164 billion songs streamed on-demand through video and audio platforms. That’s a 54% increase from the year before.
CD sales in the U.S. totaled 140 million, down 15 million from 2013, while vinyl sales increased significantly, from 6.1 million in 2013 to 9.2 million in 2014.
Detroit’s own Jack White ranked number one in 2014 with 86,700 vinyl sales for his album “Lazaretto.” Arctic Monkeys finished second, followed by Lana Del Rey, The Beatles and Bob Marley.
Eminem finished the number six top global artist. That’s based on both social and web engagement which includes Facebook likes, Twitter followers, and Wikipedia page views. Shakira finished number one, followed by Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Katy Perry and Justin Bieber.
